A Meal Worth a Detour

I won’t be doing restaurant reviews in this space — have no fear — but if you find yourself in Oslo, Norway with some free time on your hands, Restaurant Maaemo (Mother Earth in Old Norse) is an establishment that understands the French idea of persistence en bouche. All of the carefully selected ingredients are from Scandinavia, mostly from Norway, and Head Chef Esben Holmboe Bang’s eighteen-course menu is filled with original dishes that last and last on your palate. Imagine creativity married with a refined sense of deliciousness. We are not talking food here; artistry would be the correct term. The restaurant shows genius in virtually everything that it does:


The mostly French wine list could not be more attractive.

Addendum: Bien entendu, three Michelin stars. And to be honest, Maaemo beats the pants off of most Paris three-star establishments.

Addendum: Reservations are tough to get in the small dining room, though I managed to secure a table off of the waitlist. Plan ahead. You won’t be disappointed.
