Tengatenga Keeps Mum

Church of England Newspaper.jpgBishop Tengatenga’s comments to the Dartmouth community about LGBT issues are beginning to filter out into the Anglican world. In a July 28 article in the Church of England Newspaper — a widely read print and on-line paper published in London — the Bishop’s changed position on marriage equality was noted:

The chairman of the Anglican Consultative Council, the Rt. Rev. James Tengatenga, has repudiated his opposition to same-sex marriage, telling an American college newspaper the Bible’s call to treat all people with respect outweighed its condemnation of homosexual acts as sin.

Curiously, the Bishop did not respond to the Church of England Newspaper’s request for comment on his evolving views:

Dr. Tengatenga did not respond to a request for clarification of his views. However the Anglican Consultative Council’s press office last week said the bishop was under no obligation to step down as ACC chairman following his resignation as Bishop of Southern Malawi.

Why the silence? One would think that a person who aspired to head the Tucker Foundation would be more than willing to explain his stance on a pressing moral issue.
