More Like a University Every Day

Maybe we really are on our way to becoming Dartmouth University after all — if your definition of a university is an institution that has as many or more graduate students as undergrads.

Even though the faculty has passed several resolutions over the past decades directing the administration to keep graduate students below a certain percentage of undergrads, the number of graduate students continues to rise, and the proportion of undergrads declines:

Since 2003, the number of Arts & Sciences grad students has increased by 33.5%; Medical School students, 38.4%; Thayer students, 48.4%; and Tuck students, 17.9%. The number of undergrads has gone up by only 2.32%.

Here’s the data for the A&S graduate program. Medical programs and Biology grad students in their various incarnations seem to lead the way.

I wonder if Dr. Kim and Professor of Biology Carol Folt have had anything to do with these increases?

Addendum: At the current rates of growth, we’ll have more grad students than undergrads in about 25 years, or perhaps less, depending on how you do the math.
