Tree Fans Bid Elm Adieu
Dartmouth has one less great American elm — Ulmus americana — the tall, bifurcated tree in front of Collis. The College’s Planning Office announced on Thursday that the elm was taken down “due to its long time decay at its base.” The husbandry (is one allowed to use that word now?) of Hanover’s trees by College Arborist David DiBenedetto was described in a piece in Dartmouth Life in June 2007; the article quoted DiBenedetto as saying that the Collis tree’s “survival [is] nearly miraculous, considering that it’s almost completely surrounded by pavement.”
Addendum: Ivy is a good symbol for the Ancient Eight schools, but majestic trees would serve the purpose every bit as well.
