Milan Diary: Cathedral Wedding Cake
Sure it may be Disneyland Gothic, but the Duomo di Milano catches the eye. Built over a period of more than five centuries, and incorporating styles drawn from various eras and from the imaginations of several different architects, it was only considered complete (more or less) when Napolean Bonaparte ordered the façade finished so that he could be crowned King of Italy there. The golden statue of the Madonnina (the little Madonna), the building’s high point, marks the unofficial height limit for all new construction in Milan.
Milan is less often thought of as a tourist destination than, say, Rome, but it has a lively energy that Italy’s capital cannot begin to approach. Think of the difference between New York and Washington.
