A Day to Say Thank You
A Budweiser commercial that was broadcast during the Super Bowl a few years back shows appropriate gratitude to the men and women of the armed forces for their service. The historical context bears noting: during the Viet Nam war, returning soldiers at airports were often spat upon and taunted with cries of “baby killers!” Not this time around.
There are 28 cuts in this flowing, richly textured, 60-second commercial. You could spend hours reviewing the detailed choices that the director made in casting, costumes, and acting. Note, for instance, that the identity of the first person to begin clapping is not revealed. Was it you?
We might think of ads as no more than background noise to our daily life, but in many ways, they are carefully conceived works of art. Watch the clip a second time to see what I mean.
