Too Much Debt, Like Everyone Else
In an article entitled The College-cost Calamity, The Economist decries the academy’s out-of-control spending and the heaping on of longterm debt that this space has on occasion (ha!) noted with regard to the College.
As you will recall, in 2000 the College had $286 million of debt and an endowment of $2.49 billion — about 11 cents of debt for every dollar of endowment; today’s debt has risen to $1,13 billion and the endowment at the end of fiscal 2012 was $3.449 billion — 33 cents to the dollar. To put it another way, the endowment grew by 38.5% over the past twelve years, but the College’s debt load increased by 289%.
