The College’s Official Champagne
When Denise Dupre ‘80 was named to the Board in 2009, modest hopes were raised that her hotel expertise — she is a former director of Boston University’s School of Hotel Administration — would be brought to bear in the management of the Hanover Inn. However, as we have painfully seen, expertise is in short supply as regards the Inn, but perhaps there is some compensation to be had in another area.
Dupré and her husband, Bain Capital’s Mark Nunnelly, have just purchased many of the assets, though not the vineyards (Roederer bought those — rappers take note), of Champagne Leclerc Briant in Epernay. Their strategy seems to be to use bought-in grapes from contract growers to annually produce 200,000-300,000 bottles of super-premium Champagne. Lerclerc Briant is well know for producing its wines using biodynamic agricultural methods.
No word yet on whether Champagne will be served at Thayer, but it is a good bet that future Trustee meetings will be even more relaxed.
