Early Admissions: Real Analysis
Not too long ago, we lauded The D for supplementing the College’s press release about the increase in early admissions applicants with some comparative data. The D’s histogram was a material improvement over its usual practices, but Jeremy Bleeke of the Columbia Spectator has shown how this data should properly be displayed.
Looking at the number of early admissions applicants at Ivy schools relative to the size of the undergraduate class, it seems that a great many students try for the brass ring at Harvard, Yale and Princeton. Brown, Penn, Dartmouth and Columbia get a fair number of people who don’t seem to want to shoot for HYP, and Cornell ends up appearing as a safety school for élite students.
