Nancy Marion Appointed Dean: I’ll Scratch Your Back…

Marion.jpgEconomics Professor Nancy Marion has been appointed Associate Dean of the Social Sciences. Long regarded as carrying water for Carol Folt on the faculty, Marion chaired the search committee that expeditiously appointed Folt as Provost. Now it seems that Folt has returned the favor.

In the same way that Provost Folt can expect Dean of the Faculty Mike Mastanduno to follow her lead (Mastanduno was the Associate Dean of the Social Sciences to Folt’s Dean of the Faculty), Folt will continue to rely on Dean Marion.

How sad it is for the College that the same little clique that ran the College under Jim Wright still holds sway under an out-of-touch Jim Kim. Many people, including this writer, had hoped for much better.

Note: The above should in no way be considered a criticism of Professor Marion’s research record, which appears to be first rate, nor her teaching ability, also good; rather, my concern is a lack of independence of mind. Will she fight hard for good ideas and initiatives, or is her chief concern — as it has appeared to be in the past — to curry favor with Provost Folt.
