President Kim and the Union
The Valley News had a brief note today headed: Dartmouth Rejects Union Request that describes how the Kim administration has turned down a request by union officials to negotiate upcoming job cuts.
The college said administrators can’t slow down the process of identifying the cuts, college spokesman Roland Adams said yesterday. Dartmouth “cannot afford to delay critical budget decisions, particularly given the scale and urgency of the financial challenges we face,” Adams said in a statement.
Service Employees International Union Local 560 President Earl Sweet said union leaders want to talk with college officials about finding efficiencies in their work instead of losing jobs.
The union’s contract expires on June 30 and negotiations begin tomorrow on a new accord. Whether the administration is just posturing here, or showing real resolve, is unclear. But it seems that President Kim wants to get the financial situation under control as soon as possible. Good for him.
