Crass Union Protests Come to Hanover; Students Jump In
While I certainly feel for the SEIU members who may experience pay cuts and layoffs in the coming budget tightening, the rallying cry of “Cuts and Layoffs Hurt the Dartmouth Experience” rings hollow.
A huge budget deficit and shrinking endowment hurt the Dartmouth Experience even more in real terms of fewer classes, professors and reduced financial aid.
Additionally, when times are tough, we can all put up with a little longer wait for a sandwich at Food Court, or for a bathroom that gets cleaned once a week instead of twice a week. It is not Dartmouth’s responsibility to provide jobs for the Upper Valley. After all, without Dartmouth, there would be no jobs to cut in the first place. It is time we all reduced the fat of the good times; no matter how much we liked the past, it seems certain that the present and future will be lean for a while.
President Kim and the Board, don’t be afraid to cut union member positions. And don’t hold back from clearing out useless administrators.
