Pearl Harbor Day
My uncle Richard went on a joyride in someone else’s car when he was 16, got caught, and as family lore has it, the judge told him that he would do time unless he returned to the courtroom with enlistment papers signed by his mother — during WWII, minors aged 16 and 17 could enlist with parental approval. A few months later he got off a boat in Normandy on D+5. He was wounded near Falaise.
Nobody in his family was much interested in the war, but my son and I are buffs, and on Pearl Harbor Day one year we got him to start telling us his war stories. He had a lot of them, and he surely wanted us to hear them.
The youngest fighting members of the WWII generation are in their 80s now. They have memories to share about important things that they did in the 1940s. If you have never asked, you might want to do so soon.
