Guys, It’s All About Context

What was missing was the critical eye: en effort to look a little deeper into information that the administration was presenting simply as a plus. In situations where the administration puts forth a statistic — for past examples, think of the number of applicants in a given year or an increase in the average SAT score — a reporter should do a little gumshoe work and see how our peers are doing. In this instance, we would have learned something of significance if we knew that early admission applications at our Ivy peers were up on average, say, 1% or 10%. If only 1%, then the College is doing well; if 10%, then we should be concerned.
Without putting a figure like 3% in context, we don’t know much about anything…
