Good Writing and Reasoning in the D!

Hayek.jpgOne of my favorite moments on campus is when I raise my hand in a discussion group or class to answer a question but the prof calls on the shaggy student next to me, who duly proceeds to answer the question in a far better way than I had planned. Smart kid!

I can’t say that I have the same reaction all that often when reading columns in the D, but when it occurs, it is worth pointing out — as I want to do today for a column entitled “Hayek in the Basement” by Leonard Lewis ‘10. This effort seems to be Lewis’ first column; I hope that it is not his last.

I won’t summarize the piece for you. Please take the time to read it. Lewis integrates thoughtful personal observations, a close reading of Hayek (about whose philosophy you will learn even if the Dartmouth social scene is of little interest to you), a bit of history and some thoughts about our current political situation, all put forward in a seamless line of reasoning, and he does so in a fluid, well punctuated style.

Another Dartmouth pleasure is pausing three quarters of the way through a piece of writing and thinking, “Hey, this is really well written.” Keen intelligence is a joy to behold and Leonard Lewis has it aplenty.
