Mundane Banalities
My apologies, given that we are discussing weightier issues at the moment, but I just could not let this one pass. In an article in the D today by Richard Yu, he prominently quoted Professor Carolyn Cooper of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica as having made the following statement in a lecture at the College:
Americans go on vacation to escape the mundane banalities of their lives… Most Jamaicans can’t afford to do that. They envy your ability to escape your boredom and turn theirs into your pleasure.
In an academic setting, I wonder what rigorously derived data the dear professor adduced in support of this statement of fact? Is she asserting that the alienated proletariat now goes on vacation rather than to church - the erstwhile opiate of the people?
We could all share a laugh about this, but only if we forget that a part of everyone’s tuition dollars went to paying for this academic’s visit to the Hanover Plain. Mundane banalities, indeed.
