The Police/Firefighters/Paramedics Brotherhood/Union/League Fund Drive

Snake Oil.jpgI don’t know about you, but we get so many calls at home these days from various associations purporting to represent retired/active/nascent/disabled public safety professionals that I have to think that the whole thing is some kind of scam. The voice on the other end of the line is always male, with the type of accent that makes you think that the caller is just one of the guys, probably sitting there in the duty room in workboots doing the right thing. Hmmm.

We had a call from a local group of this type not too long ago, and I agreed that one of our businesses would put an ad in a local fire safety publication that is scheduled to come out in several months. The very next day a young lady came by asking to pick up a check. No so fast, Miss! In the business world, printing comes first and then we pay.

The whole thing smells vaguely of those spam e-mails that used to promise an immediate jumbo home mortgage at a super low rate no matter how bad your personal credit history!!! For obvious reasons, we don’t see those any more.

I am sure that there are honest associations of public service professionals out there, but at this point I know of no way to separate the wheat from the chaff. Too bad for the good guys. Caveat emptor.
