Danny Does Dartmouth
Dartmouth Economics Professor Danny Blanchflower has become as close to a household name as an economist can get in the UK. From his perch on Britain’s Monetary Policy Committee (the MPC is the equivalent of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s interest-rate-setting Open Market Committee), he saw the coming recession well over a year in advance of any of his peers — and he became a hero in the process.
Danny left the MPC several months ago to return to the College, but he has also signed on as a columnist for several publications in Britain. And as he did while on the MPC, Danny mentions Dartmouth every chance that he gets, including the first few paragraphs of his column in yesterday’s New Statesman:
Blanchflower is one on the College’s top profs, and like so many of the stars in the Economics Department, he is able to combine top-notch scholarship, engaging teaching, and a prominent public role. If the rest of the College’s departments and the administration itself were as good as Econ, we wouldn’t need bloggers. Bravo Danny!
Addendum: Though his given name is David, Danny gets his nickname from the legendary footballer for Tottenham Hotspur.
