John Mathias ‘69: The Clown of Campaign Finance Reform
In view of my recent post on political donations by Dartmouth’s power players, one reader noted an apparent contradiction. John Mathias ‘69, who under the guise of an “Election Reform Study Committee” is leading the charge to castrate administration critics by stripping them of the means to make their voices heard, has been profligate with his checkbook when his own interests are on the line. Mr. Mathias lavished the whopping sum of $31,900 upon various political campaigns in the 2008 election cycle alone.
Mr. Mathias also spent richly on his own campaign for the Alumni Association presidency. He contributed $5,000 to that effort, as well as another $5,000 to Sandy Alderson’s failed campaign for an alumni-elected seat on the Board of Trustees.
The reader concludes, “Nice to have money and use it, when you are unhappy that others do the same.”
