Post Prop 8 Zeitgeist
Two interesting stories, perhaps demonstrating the increasing prominence of the gay rights movement, even or especially with the passage of Prop 8 in California.
The first is the ‘Call in Gay Day,’ in which people were encouraged to not go to work (or to perform community service in lieu of their regular job) to demonstrate the importance and prevalence of gay persons in our economy. This is effort was modeled off the protests against immigration bills about two years ago, in which Mexicans or immigrants were encouraged to stay home from work. Although nobody should have to rely on the goodwill of others for their rights, I could certainly imagine resentment among business owners and customers being the dominant feeling here.
The second is a new film entitled ‘Milk,’ starring Sean Penn, about Harvey Milk one of the first openly gay politicians in the country. I’m a big fan fan of Penn, and the one personal review of the film I have heard was overwhelming positive.
