Black Friday theme - Sales up but what about profits?
Surveys over the weekend showed that sales were up 3% according to Shoppertrack and consumers spent 7% more this weekend vs. last year according to NRF. According to my Star Trek: The Next Generation calendar, there are 5 fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year vs. last, so it is not surprising that there was blood in the streets of New York this weekend as grandmothers fought over jeweled berets for little Cindy.
Consumer spending anecdotally looked to be driven by deeply discounted merchandise from bloated inventory. What can you do? It’s time to get out there and do your civic duty to lubricate the gears of capitalism. Go forth and buy Barbour coats.
