Los Angelans Protest Other Los Angelans
You might think that, if it had no other effect, an open state-wide referendum on a social issue that had consumed the public mind would at least stop the street protests thereupon, establishing that the losing side has only to convince the winning side to change its mind some years down the line; that it cannot “protest” against its own neighbors any more than it can protest dawn and dusk.
But if you did think that, you would be seriously underestimating the free time enjoyed by the gay community on weekdays. So: whatever dark forces conspired to ratify Proposition Eight—Bush? Locke? Akhil Amar and his tragically loose grip on the minds of the populace?—shall be cast down upon by a plague in the form of a parade past the designer shoppes in Hollywood, till the Valkyries in the Ninth Circuit upraise their wands and undo the bad thing which the people hath done.
