Spin
One of my friends sent me the following map of the United States (and the link to Paul Krugman’s blog with the image). Mr. Krugman’s explanation, and that of my friend, was that the Republican Party is no longer a national party, playing off Zell Miller’s book title “A National Party No More” referring to the Democrats. This map was also featured on the cover of the New York Times’ ‘After the Vote’ special section in today’s paper.
What this map actually refers to is the shift of counties since the 2004 presidential election. All blue means on this map is that Barack Obama did better in 2008 than John Kerry did in 2004 not, by itself, a tremendously impressive feat.
It does not take a Nobel Prize to decipher that this map has no bearing on whether either party is a national one. Even if it did take a Nobel Prize, perhaps my friend could be excused, but no longer Mr. Krugman. In any event, below is a map of the county results (who won each county) in the 2008 election.
Truly, this map represents impressive gains for the Democratic Party on this measure, but it hardly indicates that the GOP is in some way no longer a national party, as my friend tried to convince me.
