We’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore
is the message some Massachusetts voters are trying to send to state legislators with a ballot measure to repeal the state income tax this election.
Jeff Jacoby makes a couple great points in a Boston Globe column.
1. A few years ago a similar ballot measure got 45% of the vote, this is a serious, not just symbolic proposal.
2. “Massachusetts without a personal income tax would not be a “place with no taxes.” It would be a place with corporate income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, meals taxes, hotel taxes, excise taxes, workers’ compensation taxes, estate taxes, capital gains taxes, gasoline taxes, cigarette taxes, wine and liquor taxes, motor vehicle taxes, and real estate transfer taxes, not to mention the taxes (“license fees”) imposed on a vast array of professions and occupations.”
3. 9 other states are free of personal income taxes. The sky will not coming falling down on the Bay State if they abolish this tax. New Hampshire, by the way, is one of those income tax free states.
