Saturday at the Savoy
The cavernous Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, which ran the length of a full city block and required three big bands to float the beat across the hall, was the inspiration for Edgar Sampson’s 1934 tune “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” which, in large part because of Ella Fitzgerald, has become an American standard. Andy Razaf wrote the lyrics sung by Lady Ella, seen below in 1961 with the Oscar Peterson band. (Razaf’s best lyric? In my opinion, “Honeysuckle Rose,” the supreme specimen of which is Jane Monheit’s 2004 recording with an unnamed band of exceptional ability.)
We have already seen Ella and Frank Sinatra sing this song together—and perhaps it works better as a duet—but I think you will enjoy this particular recording.
