Ambrose Bierce on the University
Yesterday I posted a few of humorist Ambrose Bierce’s ideas on politics, a century old but ringing true today as ever.
Today I treat you to Mr. Bierce’s thoughts on education.
Academe, n. An ancient school where morality and philosophy were taught.
Academy, n. (from academe). A modern school where football is taught.
Lecturer, n. One with his hand in your pocket, his tongue in your ear and his faith in your patience.
Learning, n. The kind of ignorance distinguishing the studious.
Education, n. That which discloses to the wise and disguises from the foolish their lack of understanding.
