Dartmouth Still in Need of Reforms

The platforms on which the past four alumni-elected trustees have won election to the Board included the goal of decreasing class size and increasing availability of Dartmouth’s most popular classes. Striking up a conversation with two gentlemen at the Rockefeller Center open house the other day, I found out that both were junior class Economics majors. They were 1 for 6 in getting Econ classes. The two students requested to be placed in six Economics classes and only one of the students was even placed in one. A baseball player who goes 1-for-6 has had a bad day; a season of 1-for-6 puts a player on the bench or out of a job.

Dartmouth is clearly still in need of reform here. The Top 5 most popular Dartmouth majors have not changed in years. Still, year after year there are shortages of courses in Government and Economics, to cite just the most prominent departments.

Five new trustees have just been added to the Board of Trustees and Dartmouth is soon to get a new president. I hope that all of these folks will join in the efforts of the four petition trustees to finally address this issue. It is not political, it is a matter of common sense and good education.
