Fiscal infelicity, two (or more) open trustee seats, a deep endowment draw in a rough market. Not to mention the Second Dartmouth College Case. Jim Kim & Co. have a lot to contemplate. Dartblog brings you news and commentary from Hanover and the world at large.

Good News for McCain
Finally, some good news on the John McCain front. It seems that ever since he grabbed the nomination, the news media has ignored him, preferring to crown Barack Obama the heir apparent. Now the latest Reuters/Zogby poll is showing McCain leading Obama by 5 percentage points. Due to the 3 percent margin of error, Obama could still be slightly ahead, but it certainly looks like McCain has finally caught some momentum. It seems that there must be a connection between this new poll and two recent events: the conflict in Georgia and McCain’s aggressive campaign ads portraying Obama as a big celebrity unready to lead. The campaign has, up to this point, focused mainly on the economy, overlooking the leading role that the president must play in foreign policy. The conflict in Georgia created an opportunity for McCain to showcase his credentials in this arena. He also raised serious questions about Obama’s readiness to lead. Hillary Clinton previously raised this question in the primaries and it is valid. Can a state senator with four years of experience in the U.S. Senate really take on the executive power of the United States? No. The position of President of the United States is far too important to be given to someone with questionable judgment, little to no relevant experience, and just enough charm to fool the American public. I’m encouraged that my fellow citizens are beginning to recognize McCain’s many positive qualities and his readiness to lead America for the next four years.
