Female Mudslingers

In a move far more typical of her nastier congressional colleague Hillary Clinton, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi lashed out at President Bush when questioned about her own failings. Rather than admit that she has been unable to pass any spending bills [the situation is now worse than it has been in 20 years], she directed her anger at the President.

“You know, God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject,” Pelosi replied. She also took Bush to task for “challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again.”

Let’s analyze this comment charge that the president is losing credibility with the American people on every issue. While President Bush is certainly not as popular as he once was, he maintains an approval rating 10 points higher than that of Congress. Pelosi has failed time and again to pass meaningful legislation and engaging in petty political battles that held up necessary funding for soldiers in Iraq. She has dragged her feet on any and all policies that Bush set forward for the nation. While that is a typical political move to waste the last few years of his term while the new president is chosen, it is not very responsible for an elected representative to stop the government from functioning. In any other job, if one failed to perform one’s duties, they would be fired. Sadly enough, the American people have come to expect it of Congress. In addition, the surge approved by President Bush proved successful despite pessimistic predictions from Democrats in Congress.

I can not say that I agree with President Bush on anything, but he hardly qualifies as a total failure. His work on aid to Africa, his swift response to 9/11, and his removal of an evil dictator from power are all successes that people will remember later.

Pelosi’s comments disgust me, but they are comforting in one way- a woman so willing to publicly throw mud can have no greater political aspirations. We certainly have no need for another female viper attempting to secure a presidential nomination.
