Shameless Smear from the Board-Packers

Today brought the predictable, shameless attempt to spin last week’s tasteless cartoon as representative of the views of all pro-parity crusaders.

In a letter published in The Dartmouth today, Andrew Chu ‘01 opens by setting up the straw man of the Phrygian Society, goes on to rail about love and trust and community support and whatever else, and then comes out with this:

Sadly, this event is a clear reminder that there are indeed two distinct sets of traditions that are being rallied around in the recent alumni debates. There are the traditions that build trust and camaraderie among Dartmouth’s past and future leaders and there are the traditions that seek to isolate Dartmouth from the world, creating a backwards and toxic environment for anyone but those who share these views.

That’s just rich. Large pluralities of Dartmouth alumni voted for T.J. Rogers, Todd Zywicki, and Peter Robinson, majorities defeated the constitution and supported Stephen Smith, and 92 percent opposed the board-packing plot.

Unless Mr. Chu would honestly contend that 92 percent of Dartmouth alumni are bigots, his conclusion is nothing more than selfish smear of the most offensive sort.
