« Declining Democracy, Act Now | Home | For Hanover-Based Readers »

The bleak situation among Democrats appears bleaker still given this new Gallup poll showing that “a sizable portion” of Democrats will vote for John McCain, regardless of who is the Democrat nominee. If Hillary Clinton wins the nomination, 19% of Obama supporters would vote for McCain; if Barack Obama wins, 28% of Clinton supporters would vote for McCain.

The McCain camp, in an email this morn, calls this the news item of the day. Just so: the defection is of an appreciable, perhaps mortal, size, no matter how the Democrat race falls out. The wondrous thing about it all? Perhaps I simply lack the faculties necessary to comprehend Democrat politics, but haven’t Clinton and Obama supporters been needling one another for a year now about nothing more than the images, brands, and personalities of the two candidates? All this passion, all this incipient betrayal, over nothing more than image. C’est triste.
