Only Some Students Welcome?
In my blitz inbox today, I received an invitation to a luncheon with the Trustees of the College. The invitation requested an RSVP to the Dean of the College Office along with a completed biographical information sheet. The email noted, “If we have interest that exceeds our capacity, I will work with the Dean of the College Office to insure that the students confirmed to attend represent a broad cross section of the student body.” Should students really have to submit their biographies to meet with Trustees? Is the Board of Trustees such a closed institution that they find themselves unwilling to meet with just any student?
In the fall, this theory was tested with the “Ask the Trustees Anything” event, organized by a small group of students who strongly believed that all students should have the opportunity to question the Trustees entrusted with the future of their College. It was the first event of its kind, and approximately 200 students chose to attend, even though it was held on a Friday afternoon. I wonder how many students will be allowed at this upcoming luncheon.
If one is looking for a diverse cross section of the student body, I would imagine that I qualify. After all, I’ve never met another conservative, Catholic, French speaking, competitive shotgun shooter at the College. We shall see if the Dean of the College agrees. Unfortunately, some prefer to think of diversity as exclusive property of the left, when diversity in fact is not exclusive property of anyone. Diversity, by definition, should encompass everyone.
