A few days ago a discussion on Dartblog about something-or-other prompted a reader to challenge my punctuation: I had made a proper noun possessive by adding an apostrophe and then an “s,” rather than just an apostrophe. I posted the riposte, and promptly a choir of angels arose in my defense, praising Strunk and saying, “It’s awkward but correct;” “Malchow had it right;” “Up with grammar and down with aesthetics;” “Does no one care about propriety any longer?”

Well. Today let us give the final word to Jack Burnett, Dartmouth Class of 1971 and chief copy editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Mr. Burnett writes: “Joe, you’re doing just fine in the apostrophes/possessives department.”

Thank you for checking into Dartblog, Mr. Burnett.
