Tony Blair announced today that he will leave office on June 27 aften ten years as the Prime Minister of Britain. Here is the New York Times report and here, from the BBC, are excerpts from his address. Labor has chosen Gordon Brown, currently in charge of the exchequer, to follow Mr. Blair until elections can be held.

Britons will turn, at least for a bit, to thinking what Mr. Blair has accomplished in his time on Downing Street. The Wall Street Journal provides an excellent remembrance of his leadership here, and I agree with it: Mr. Blair was an extraordinary leader. Much of his goodness can be heard in those quote from his farewell speech: “I ask you to accept one thing. Hand on heart, I did what I thought was right. I may have been wrong. That’s your call. But believe one thing: I did what I thought was right for our country.”
