This Stanza’ll Show ‘Em!
Though I cannot access it because I am not a Selectman, I am reliably informed that The New York Times is taking up the mantle of pop-poetry-politicking by launching another Poetry Against the War contest, this time called ‘On the Ground.’ Nicholas Kristof, a regular columnist for the paper, is sponsoring the event. The website is here.
The last time this hip conceit was inflicted upon us was in January 2003, when a gaggle of poets slammed the war—get it?—causing the White House to cancel an event honoring actual American poetry. (The sort often about strength, God, purpose, and the defense of the right.) In response The Wall Street Journal editorial department sponsored a Poetry for the War contest, and received submissions from twelve-year-olds that rivaled virtually everything the Ivy League types were able to produce on the other side.
