Alex Ross, music critic for The New Yorker but more importantly the author of a nice little blog, reports that his inside sources say that the “American Idol” finale will take place in the wonderful Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles and will, yes, feature the local Philharmonic. The show will kick off with “a quick rendition of the ‘Trinklied’ from Das Lied von der Erde.”

You know, the first or second season of “American Idol” had a not-terrible amateur opera singer as one of the semi-semi-finalists. He was booted early on. The ratings have never really recovered.

RELATEDLY: Alex reports that classical music is not, contra The Guardian, dead.
