It’s final exams time, and the livin’ is far from easy. As I toil in the stacks, posting has slowed to a trickle. Beg pardon. For your enjoyment, then, here is Ella Fitzgerald in 1965 mangling—swingingly and famously—the Kurt Weill standard Mack the Knife. At least the Tommy Flannigan Trio doesn’t forget the notes. And at least Ella has got her old standby: her Louis Armstrong impression.

Ella looks a bit bashful at the end. But do you know what? Not a single band playing today could pull off something like that. Not one.
