To Dutch, and his Nancy, too
On December 1, 1985, Variety Clubs International, the Hollywood children’s charity, hosted a tribute dinner for President Ronald Reagan. Frank Sinatra was the emcee of the evening, but Dean Martin captured the night when, backed by just a piano and a sheen of strings, he sang a tweaked version of “Mr. Wonderful,” the ballad from the the 1956 musical composed by George David Weiss, and made famous by Sarah Vaughan. (She, in her usual way, had melted it into a love song.)
Dean Martin’s musical toast to the President—he combines the comical lyric of the Broadway round (originally sung by Sammy Davis, Jr.) with the mood of Sarah Vaughan’s doting version—throttles you into an alien White House of quiet dignity and good humor. I ought to have waited for a special occasion to share this video, but it was too perfect not to post immediately. Enjoy.
Ronald Reagan gave these remarks at the close of the evening.
