It was on January 18 in 1998 that Matt Drudge, on his nascent Drudge Report, revealed that President Clinton had carried on a White House amour with Monica Lewinsky, then an intern—and that Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff had chipped away at the seismic story only to have it quashed that very evening by editors. At 2:30 in the morning, Drudge got it out. And the moment he did, the way the news worked changed forever.
