The War on Consumer Freedom
One of the penalties for having a relaxing few weeks at home is that I must listen to the “Today” show in the morning. Some days ago, Matt Lauer introduced one of his segments by saying, as though he were reporting straight news, that “New York City is blazing a trail” by ordering all of its twenty-five thousand restaurants to stop using a legal food ingredient popularly referred to as transfat. That struck me as an awfully silly thing to say, insofar as the city council has not blazed a trail so much as regressed to sadder, earlier epochs when governments could tell their citizens (this was back when governments had citizens, not vice versa) what to eat.
