The city council of San Diego has passed a law banning “stores of more than 90,000 square feet that use 10% of space to sell groceries and other merchandise that is not subject to sales tax.” This means Wal*Mart.

Anti Wal*Martists revel in the illusion that they are angels of the light, but in point of fact they are more likely to be motivated by crass protectionism, special interests, and lobbyists than Wal*Mart itself. Warren Meyer, a small business owner, puts asunder the notion that anti-freedom city councils like San Diego’s are acting out of genuine concern for citizens. In fact, they are obeying their lobbyist masters.
