In New Hampshire’s Largest Newspaper, Dartmouth Republicans and Democrats Come Out Against Proposed Constitution

Adam Patinkin ‘07, president of the New Hampshire College Democrats, and Rahul Sangwan ‘07, president of the Dartmouth College Republicans, have come out in the pages of the New Hampshire Union Leader against the proposed new constitution. The piece is called “At Dartmouth, an outrageous assault on democracy.” Here is a very small taste of the article, which focuses on both the substance of the constitution and the more abstract concerns it raises:

The debate over the constitution has drawn national and statewide media attention largely because two of the recently elected petition candidates are well-known conservatives. Unfortunately, some have tried to frame the controversy as a left-right battle pitting progressive insiders against conservative outsiders. This is simply not the case.

Dartmouth students of all political persuasions have recognized the shortfalls of the proposed constitution and the executive committee’s disregard for democratic values of openness and integrity to elected office. This is not a struggle between right and left, but rather a fight for democracy — for fairness.
