Democrats Postpone Alito Voting; Reasons Not Given

The top-of-the-hour radio broadcast from ABC News last evening described Judge Samuel Alito’s confirmation as “inevitable.” Senate Democrats do not disagree, per Senator Leahy’s reported guarantee to Arlen Specter that “no Democratic senator” will ask for a second delay in the vote. Why, then, are Democrats enacting the one-week delay at all? Is there any benefit for them? Is a drawing out of this episode which has so slimed Senator Kennedy somehow deleterious for Republicans? Are there more personal documents lodged in the Library of Congress which might convict Alito of having known some man, joined some club, or eaten some food? I simply cannot divine an answer.
