Blame Anyone But The Criminals

When twenty Muslims terrorized a train in France this New Year’s Day and engaged in mass violence, robbery, and sexual assault, the reports called them “youths.” And the politicians started to search for who to blame. The Socialist party said the train’s lack of security was to blame and “questioned why it took so long for police to rescue the passengers.” Nicolas Sarkozy, meanwhile, put the blame on the state-run rail company SNCF. “The problem is that law-enforcement services didn’t know that there was a promotional fare going,” he said.

John Hinderaker rightly mocks this episode. But, truly, it is horrifying. If I were a “disaffected youth” in France, I’d feel omnipotent.
