Time’s Persons of the Year

The year’s most influential people have been chosen: Bill Gates, his wife, and Paul Hewson.

UPDATE: Hewson, otherwise known as “Bono,” is photographed between Bill and Melinda Gates on the cover. How strange.

UPDATE: Yes, it bugs Ann Althouse, too. There is actually quite a bit of negative reaction to the choices. The decision clearly went along a political line: that is, to avoid any intimation of partisanship in the issue. Time probably calculated—dreadfully accurately, I suspect—that had it chosen the obvious, the Iraqi people, it would have been called a doffing of the hat to the White House. Or maybe the editors just didn’t want to give Bush any credit.
