King Solomon Many Strange Amendments
In response to “Suppose There Were Equality”, Michael Herman takes issue with my representation of the ability of government to control private institutions which take its funds. I think he overplays my argument and I have trouble with the Boy Scouts v. Dale comparison as it relates to my point, but his is a worthwhile survey of two cases that have importantly restricted governmental power with respect to private membership organizations.
Army mountain-warfare trainer Jared Smith, meanwhile, e-mails that the issue is much wider than ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’:
The U.S. suffers from a complete absence of any measure of required service; individuals have no form, pattern or reason to look beyond the narrow range of their own personal interests. I, me, my run amuck. Couple this with a pompous and negative view of the military particularly at the ivy league level, and the trench lines are in place for full-on class warfare! Maybe that’s not all bad. The balance of my fellow soldiers come from solid working class backgrounds. They understand and appreciate hard work and sacrifice. They set a standard for service and dedication that has no parallel in the academic world. As a man, it makes me proud and humble to associate daily with individuals who measure them selves through achievement, leadership and sacrifice.
