Corporal Punishment Disputes Up in N.Y.
It is something of a strange epidemic. Reports of undue punishment from public school teachers have doubled in the past five years. And the number of districts complying with a law requiring semiannual reports on the number of incidents is falling. Bad news. But the type of punishments for bad behavior cited in the report (pushing, grabbing arms, mouths taped shut, stand outside in the snow for eight minutes) don’t strike me as especially egregious. Perhaps the perceived standard of action is just lower. That seems to be an underinvestigated angle.
