Who Loves Ya, Baby?
Foreign Policy is something I don’t read nearly enough of, and they do a marvelous job of putting content on the web.
In the latest issue, Anne Applebaum goes in search of pro-Americanism. There is lots to be found; but not in places traditionally able to broadcast their views into the world’s ether. The short story is that economically frisky nations, like India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, and the Philippines, have hotbeds of pro-Americanism: people who are living better lives because of globalization. And all over the world- even in Olde Europe- men are significantly better disposed to like Americans than are women. In Britain, the poor are twice as likely to be supporters of America than the very rich. Applebaum summarizes it this way: “…those on their way up are pro–American, and those who have arrived are much less so.”
