Is The Worst Over In Iraq?

Not necessarily, but I think headlines like that will begin cropping up on the public radar by Christmastime. Today, Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari had a joint presser with Donald Rumsfeld. During the press briefing, some news was made. The Prime Minister said the time had arrived to plan a transition from American to Iraqi military control throughout the country. Obviously, there is no talk of a pullout date, “But,” al-Jaafari said, “we confirm and we desire speed in that regard.”

Also today, Gen. George Casey, the top commander in Iraq, said, according to an AP report, “he believed a U.S. troop withdrawal could begin by spring 2006 if progress continues on the political front and if the insurgency does not expand.”
