SCOTUS Speculation: Linkage
With an announcement imminent and news that Gonzales will be sitting tight, speculation abounds:
Michelle Malkin rounds up reax and advice here.
…expect the Republicans to use the “nuclear option” if necessary to get the nomination through.O’Connor’s retirement was a blessing for American conservatives. Both common sense and conventional wisdom (a powerful duo) dictate that Democrats must and will go easier on Bush’s nominee for the first SCOTUS slot in order to avoid the ‘obstructionist’ label. Their plan was to be able to say, “We let one through; we aren’t unreasonable.” when the time came for nomination number two. Now, with the moderate’s spot open first, Bush is going to [hopefully] nominate a real conservative judge, irking Democrats but reminding them that the fight to keep an even more conservative justice off the bench is only forthcoming, with Rehnquist’s eventual retirement. And Gonzales? Bush will still eventually have one more — perhaps two more — nominations during his term. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Gonzales be proposed next time around.
DraftPrado.org says… Draft Prado.
Alexander K. McClure approves of the new shortlist: N’Orleans appeals judges Edith Jones or Edith Clement.
Patterico says, “Let’s hope this is true” in response to the above news, but, like others, wants Priscilla Owen and notes the (not very) old ages of the shortlist candidates.
